Zannah Noe is fine artist working in mix media. As a formally trained photographer and painter she is using Instagram and working with new technology within social media. Inspired by her photos she retranslates the work into paintings. Her paintings become lush color abstract backgrounds with collaged elements from her photos and observations of a place or person.
Currently she is working on a series called American Bones that will be a three-year project of traveling the states for five months exploring the past and present deep cultural threads of America. The paintings and photographs will explore our nation’s regionalism and its distinct cultural roots. She is interested in what creates these distinctions and to see how they contribute to the common thread that is Americanism - Retranslating Americana.
Noe will have the first American Bones photography exhibit in September 2012 at her space Velcrow Studios in San Francisco. She will create The American Bones Photo Book of her travels and it will be available the following year. In 2013, she will be working in New Mexico to work out the themes she photographed and retranslate them into book form and onto canvas, the second phase of The American Bones Series.
She is originally from Concord Massachusetts but resides in San Francisco, California. She studied photography under Carrie Mae Weems at Hampshire College and art at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Her work is widely collected and she runs her own art space in San Francisco, Velcrow Studios. Currently her work can be seen in San Francisco, New Mexico, New York, Massachusetts, and Maine.
